Breeder Code of Ethics

SECTION 1 - UNDERTAKING Each person, applying for a breeder membership of the UKBC, agrees to comply with the UKBC Breeder code of ethics relating to responsible dog ownership as set out under Section 2.  

SECTION 2 - CODE OF ETHICS I undertake  that: -  

  1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and receive proper Veterinary attention, if and when required.

  2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large and when in public places shall ensure they are leashed as required or under control at all times.

  3. My primary consideration will be the welfare of the dogs in my care and for the breed as a whole.  

  4. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, or falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding any dog.

  5.  I shall fully explain to all prospective Boerboel purchasers the disadvantages as well as the advantages of owning a Boerboel.  

  6. I shall use my best endeavours to ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibilities for the care and welfare of the animal and that they have the time and facilities to fulfil their obligations to the dogs.  

  7. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or dogs placed by me written details of all dietary and immunization requirements and shall make them aware of their responsibilities as dog owners to the community at large.  

  8. I shall encourage all Boerboel owners to train and socialize their dogs and to participate in such schemes as the Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Scheme.  

  9. I shall ensure when selling or transferring a dog to another person that a complete documentary record of the transaction is supplied to the purchaser or transferee.  Documentation will include a written contract detailing the rights and obligations of both parties and an undertaking to provide SABT registration papers when applicable.  

  10. I shall not mate any dog that has not been officially appraised and registered, or that is under 18 months of age. Permission must be sought and granted in writing by the UKBC to vary these provisions.  

  11. I shall not breed more than two litters within a three-season-period or more than six litters in total from one bitch. Permission must be sought and granted in writing by the UKBC to vary these provisions.  

  12. I shall not permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated except to a dog of the same breed.

  13. I will, before entering into a breeding agreement carefully analyse the conformation and pedigrees of the prospective sire and dam. I shall refuse the mating if, in my opinion, it will not be in the best interest of the breed.  

  14. I will screen my dogs using a recognised program of hip scoring.

  15. I shall have all dogs elbow x-rayed and their elbows scored by th BVA or similar organisation.. Dogs born before December 2005 and already certified in writing by a veterinarian as free from dysplasia are exempt from this requirement.

  16. I will report all hip and elbow scores to the UKBC for inclusion in the Boerboel database.

  17. I will not breed from dogs who do not meet or exceed the current UKBC breeding recommendations.  

  18. I will encourage all purchasers of puppies to have their dogs hip and elbow scored on maturity and, with their permission, will send the results to the UKBC for inclusion in the Boerboel database.  

  19. I shall provide my puppies with a stimulating environment and handle them regularly to ensure early socialisation. 

  20.  I shall ensure all puppies are suitably healthy, vaccinated, wormed and treated against fleas before their placement.  

  21.  I shall responsibly home my dogs and be prepared to re-home them if necessary.  

  22. I will not deal with dog wholesalers or sell puppies to pet shops and I will include in all stud contracts an agreement to be signed by the owner of the bitch that no puppies resulting from the mating will be wholesaled, sold or given to pet shops or wholesale dog breeders or dealers. Furthermore, I will refuse to wholesale (buy or sell) any registered breed of dog, singly or in litter lots.

  23. I shall not knowingly sell or gift any dog to unethical dealers, or directly or indirectly allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind.  

  24. I shall conduct my business in accordance with UK law, or the law of my country of residence .

  25. I shall report any mistreatment of Boerboels or use in illegal activities immediately to the UKBC and relevant authorities.  

SECTION 3 - FAILURE TO OBSERVE Any person failing to observe any provisions of the Code of Ethics may be subject to disciplinary action

SECTION 4 — DECLARATION Please sign & return one copy and keep the other for your records. I declare I have read and understood all the information contained in this document and herby choose to abide by the rules set out by the UKBC. Furthermore, I understand that I may be asked to provide evidence of compliance at any time.
